Jasra asked me to expound a little on the books I had recently read.
Wolfblade is the first in a trilogy AFTER a trilogy. So you'd want to read that wonderful trilogy first:
These books are about a woman who grows up in an atheist society and comes to find out she is the prophesied "Demon Child" who is supposed to slay a God. Epic fantasy with plenty of intrigue, magic and war.
Wolfblade is a prequel to the Demon Child stories, focusing on a minor character and her rise to power. A ton of intrigue, some magic. One major character from the first trilogy is a child in Wolfblade.
Shadowmarch by Tad Williams has it all. Magic, war intrigue and pages that keep you guessing and turning. Briony and Barrick are the 15 year old princess and prince of kingdom of Southmarch where the King has been kidnapped and they can't afford the ransom. Prince Kendrick rules as Regent but he is brutally murdered and the twins must step in as regents and there are more than the squabbling nobility to worry about -- the fairy folk are on the move from the north, bringing there own brand of terror from beneath the Shadows.
Excellent book. Only problem -- the sequel won't be ready until March, 2007!!!
The Mists of Avalon changed my life completely because it made me ask the question "What if?" And it made me wonder for the first time about religions other than Christianity, specifically ones that worshipped the Goddess. That book got me walking down a whole different path -- while I was in Seminary -- and I'm a better person for it.
