What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
Submitted by sami711.
My favorite tradition is picking out a Christmas tree. Since I was a little kid, my family made it a big adventure. We rotated whose turn it was to pick out the tree. When I went away to college, they hauled a tree home from a highway lot in West Virginia. Then one year my dad had a broken foot and got a pulmonary embolism. He couldn't get the tree, so he passed the reins to my brother. Mike had been driving by a lot at a local Fire Department and he told my sister not to worry - they'd find The Perfect Tree.
They did. And for 11 years our family has been going to that Fire Department for the tree. First we pick out a tree for my parent's lot. Then we look for tree's for brother and myself. Along the way we look for what we call "Flex Trees", named after my grandfather who could never afford a tree until Christmas Eve and always brought home a tree that had less than stellar qualifications.
Here's an example of a Flex Tree:
This year I just kept laughing and smiling, which I really needed to do.
And here's my tree:

The vegetables. I load my plate up with them and just a bit of turkey and fresh homemade bread and go to town.
What's your dream career?

To be a philanthropist. I want to help people and organizations with grant money for unique ideas and projects. It doesn't look like I'll ever have the money to do this, but I always say that if I won the lottery the first thing I'd do is make a foundation to accomplish this. And what sort of things would I fund? I'd endow two scholarships at my alma maters -- one for someone like me at WVWC who studied Communication and Christian Education, because I think it was th best use of my time there. You learned to preach, after all, and teach. And at Drew a theology award, because there isn't one, and that's a damn shame. Then I'd focus on two areas: Appalachia and areas of the world affected by genoicide and AIDS. Appalachia because that's my soul's home -- I love it there and simple feel my best there. I'd like to fund arts projects, writing grants, and money for interdenominational ministries that help the poor. The AIDS crisis is well-documented but people are still not paying attention to it. They need money for medication and health care. I'd like to help that somehow. And genoicide from Latin America to Africa to the Middle East and beyond gets us to say OH NO but helplessness soon has us turning away. I'd like to focus on turning that helpessness away. I've worked with people in Nicaragua... I know how to help turn "What can I do?" into "I did something, and it mattered!"
That would be my dream career. (Not that the one I've got is too shabby)
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Why?

Somewhere in Appalachia, and it looks like I'll be taking care of that this spring.
